what to say

structure

When speaking or writing to Members of Parliament, you’re not trying to convince them like you might a friend or colleague. The current state of affairs is their responsibility. They have the power to change it. Here’s one way to go about it:

Contacting a Minister
  • Introduce yourself.
  • The problem: What concerns you most about the current state of affairs?
  • Your experience: How has the justice system affected you and those you care about?
  • The vision: What could be better if our government prioritised care, not cages?
  • Community support: You’re not the only one who feels this way. Our open letter shows wide support among academics, criminal justice experts, and organisations across many sectors.
  • Their responsibility: Call for the Minister to review the 12 recommendations of the Turuki! Turuki! report and commit to transforming our justice system.
Contacting your MP
  • Introduce yourself. Make it clear that you’re contacting them because they represent you and your community.
  • The problem: How does the current justice system affect you and your community? How would tough on crime policies make things worse?
  • Your experience: Do you have any personal stories you want your MP to hear and take into account?
  • The vision: What could be better for your community if our government prioritised care, not cages? Are there specific things you’d like funded or supported instead of prisons?
  • Community support: You’re not the only one who feels this way. Our open letter shows wide support among academics, criminal justice experts, and organisations across many sectors.
  • Their responsibility: Call for your MP to review the 12 recommendations of the Turuki! Turuki! report and promote adopting them in Parliament.

If you need more guidance, we’ve provided some potential talking points on our Speak Out page here.

In her recent opinion piece for the New Zealand Herald, republished on our blog and her website (PDF), Dr Lin Mussell also provides a powerful fact-based argument you can draw from.
